Maritime accidents remain a pressing issue in Indonesia, with human error, inadequate safety standards, and regulatory gaps often outweighing the impact of extreme weather. Together with Prof. Daeng Paroka, a distinguished Professor of Ocean Engineering at Universitas Hasanuddin, our lab is diving deep into the multidimensional factors behind these incidents to pave the way for safer seas.
Understanding the Problem
Over the past five years, Indonesia has witnessed over 250 maritime accidents, resulting in loss of life and significant economic damage. While severe weather plays a role, human negligence, such as overloading, poor maintenance, and failure to secure cargo, is responsible for more than half of these incidents.
The tragic sinking of the KMP Mukhlisa ferry, which claimed two lives, underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures. Factors like shifting cargo during rough weather, structural weaknesses, and inadequate oversight continue to threaten maritime operations.
