Dimensioning Traditional Wooden Ships for Safer Maritime Operations

Date & Location: May 9โ€“11, 2025 | Tana Beru, Bulukumba Regency

Our lab recently conducted an exciting data collection activity to capture the dimensions of 8 traditional wooden ships using advanced total station technology. This effort is part of our ongoing research to address critical safety challenges in wooden ship operations and enhance maritime navigation practices.

Why This Matters

Traditional wooden ships play a vital role in small-scale fisheries and coastal transport. However, the lack of primary design data has left gaps in assessing their safety during operations. By creating precise lines plans for each vessel, we aim to develop standardized safety criteria and improve operational security for these ships.

Using total station technology, we were able to complete data collection in just 2 days, significantly reducing time compared to conventional methods. This efficient approach ensures accurate, reliable data while respecting the unique characteristics of each ship.

Goals of the Activity

  • Obtain authentic dimensional data from 8 wooden ships with varying sizes.
  • Support the development of safety instruments for traditional vessels.
  • Contribute to safer and more sustainable maritime practices.
