Prof. Dr. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D., Sp.MK(K) visited Leicester University in the United Kingdom as part of a broader collaboration program with the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). This academic visit focused on the development of joint research proposals and the mapping of scientific resources in the fields of tropical health, infectious diseases, and molecular biomedical sciences.
In a scientific forum attended by multidisciplinary researchers from the UK and Asia, Prof. Nasrum served as a keynote speaker, highlighting Indonesia’s vast potential in infectious disease research—particularly in areas such as tuberculosis, HIV, and emerging infectious diseases. He also addressed the challenges in developing molecular diagnostics and genetic-based therapies suited for tropical environments like Indonesia.
As part of the visit, Prof. Nasrum toured Leicester University’s advanced research laboratories, which have a strong track record in immunology, genomics, and the development of vaccines and diagnostic tools. Strategic discussions were held with faculty leaders and research institutions to align future collaborative projects for UKRI funding opportunities.
This visit resulted in a preliminary commitment to form a bilateral research consortium between UNHAS and Leicester University, focusing on “Precision Tropical Medicine.” This collaboration aims not only to boost joint publications and innovation outputs but also to facilitate researcher exchanges, human resource capacity building, and technology transfer for laboratory systems in Eastern Indonesia.
