Entomopathogenic Biopesticide Socialization

Bone Regency, Indonesia, October 25, 2025/BIONE/–A community engagement activity focusing on the dissemination of an entomopathogenic-based biopesticide known as Pestodin was conducted as an alternative strategy for sustainable pest management. The program aimed to introduce farmers to environmentally friendly pest control solutions that reduce reliance on synthetic chemical pesticides while maintaining agricultural productivity.

The activity involved a total of 27 participantsconsisting of Prof. Itji Diana Daud, M.S. as the leader of TRG BIONE two lecturers, two researchers, six students, and sixteen members of local farmer groups. The diverse composition of participants created a collaborative environment that encouraged the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and practical insights related to pest management challenges in local farming systems. During the session, participants were introduced to the concept of entomopathogenic microorganisms and their role as biological control agents. Pestodin, as a biopesticide derived from entomopathogenic fungi, was presented as an effective and eco-friendly alternative for controlling insect pests. The discussion covered its mode of action, application methods, and advantages compared to conventional pesticides, including reduced environmental impact, improved safety for farmers, and compatibility with integrated pest management (IPM) practices.

 

The outreach activity was conducted interactively, allowing farmers to share their current pest control practices and challenges. This engagement enabled the facilitators to tailor the information to local conditions and ensure that the recommendations were practical and applicable. Demonstrations and explanations emphasized the importance of correct application techniques and timing to maximize the effectiveness of the biopesticide in the field. In addition to knowledge dissemination, the activity also highlighted the broader benefits of adopting biological control approaches, including the preservation of natural enemies and the maintenance of ecological balance within agricultural ecosystems. 

 

The involvement of students provided them with valuable field experience, enhancing their understanding of applied pest management and strengthening their capacity to contribute to community based agricultural development. This activity represents an important step toward promoting sustainable agriculture in Bone Regency. By introducing Pestodin as an alternative pest control solution, the program supports the transition toward safer, environmentally responsible farming practices while fostering collaboration between researchers, extension services, and farming communities.

 

These efforts are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1 (No Poverty) by improving farmers’ livelihoods, Goal 4 (Quality Education) through knowledge dissemination and student involvement, and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration among stakeholders. In addition, this initiative supports Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing sustainable crop protection, Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the reduction of chemical pesticide use, and Goal 15 (Life on Land) by promoting biodiversity conservation and ecosystem-based pest management.
