Makassar, Indonesia, April 21, 2026/BIONE/–Every year, millions of farmers face the same invisible threat tiny insect pests that silently destroy crops and reduce harvests. In tropical regions, two of the most destructive species are the cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella) and the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). These pests attack cocoa and maize, two essential crops that support food security and livelihoods, causing yield losses of up to 80% in unmanaged conditions. This situation highlights the urgent need for effective and sustainable pest management strategies.

Makassar, Indonesia, April 21, 2026/BIONE/–The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is one of the most invasive agricultural pests in the world. Originally from the American continent, this species has rapidly spread across Africa and Asia, including Indonesia. In East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the pest has become a serious threat to corn production, attacking leaves and growing points, and significantly reducing crop yields. What makes this pest particularly challenging is not only its ability to spread quickly up to 100 km per day but also its biological diversity. Different strains of S. frugiperda may behave differently, making control strategies more complex and less predictable.

However, its productivity is constantly threatened by the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis), a destructive pest that attacks stems and disrupts plant growth. Infestation by this insect can significantly reduce yield, making pest management a critical concern for farmers.

Makassar, Indonesia, April 19, 2026/BIONE/–Stored food products such as flour, grains, and processed commodities are highly vulnerable to pest infestation. One of the most notorious pests in this system is the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), which is widely known for damaging stored food and reducing its quality. This insect not only contaminates food products but also causes economic losses due to decreased market value and food safety concerns.
