Biopesticide Laboratory Development Outreach

Makassar, Indonesia, December 17, 2024/BIONE/–Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture conducted an outreach and socialization activity at the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, aimed at strengthening institutional capacity in the development and regulation of environmentally friendly pest management technologies. The activity encouraged the establishment of a biopesticide testing laboratory to support the development, standardization, and quality assurance of biopesticide products, particularly those derived from biological control agents.

The activity was attended by five participants, consisting of Prof. Dr. Ir. Itji Diana Daud, M.S., leader of the TRG BIONE, and four representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture. The meeting provided an important platform for dialogue between government stakeholders and academia, allowing participants to exchange perspectives on current challenges and opportunities in the development of biopesticide-based technologies.

During the session, discussions focused on the importance of establishing a dedicated laboratory facility for the testing and evaluation of biopesticide products. Such a facility is essential to ensure that biopesticides meet quality standards, are safe for the environment, and are effective in controlling target pest organisms. The development of a standardized testing laboratory is also crucial in supporting regulatory processes and facilitating the wider adoption of biological pest control solutions in agricultural practices.

In addition, the outreach activity highlighted the role of research institutions in supporting national agricultural development through innovation and scientific research. The integration of academic expertise and government initiatives is expected to accelerate the development of sustainable pest management technologies and reduce dependence on synthetic chemical pesticides. Participants also discussed potential collaborative efforts in research, training, and capacity building to support the establishment and operation of the laboratory.

This activity represents a significant step toward the establishment of a biopesticide testing laboratory, reinforcing the commitment of both government and academia to advancing sustainable agriculture and environmentally sound pest management strategies. The proposed facility is expected to serve as a center for research, innovation, and capacity building in biopesticide development while supporting regulatory implementation and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders.

These efforts are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1 (No Poverty) through supporting farmers’ livelihoods, Goal 4 (Quality Education) through knowledge exchange and capacity building, and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration among academic institutions and stakeholders. In addition, the initiative contributes to Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the promotion of sustainable agricultural innovations.
