A recent scientific study reveals an exciting possibility: turning these natural ingredients into advanced nanomaterials may significantly improve bone growth and health.
Bone development is a crucial part of childhood. During this period, the body builds what scientists call “peak bone mass,” which determines bone strength for life. Poor nutrition—especially low calcium intake—can lead to weaker bones, increasing the risk of health problems later. This is where innovation meets tradition.
A study titled “Combination of anchovy nanocalcium and shrimp shell nanochitosan on mandibular growth and density in young rats (an in vivo on Rattus norvegicus)” explores how local Indonesian resources can be transformed into powerful health solutions. Published in the Journal of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research by Sami Publishing Company in 2026, this research highlights how anchovies (rich in calcium) and shrimp shells (rich in chitosan) can be processed into nanoparticles for better absorption in the body.
Unlike regular calcium, which is only partially absorbed, nanocalcium is much smaller in size, allowing it to enter the body more efficiently. Meanwhile, nanochitosan not only supports bone formation but also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. When combined, these two substances work synergistically to enhance bone density, growth, and strength.
In the study, young rats were given different treatments, and the group receiving the combination of anchovy nanocalcium and shrimp shell nanochitosan showed the most significant improvement in mandibular (jaw) bone growth. Their bones were denser, longer, and heavier compared to other groups. This suggests a promising future for natural, affordable, and locally sourced health interventions.
