This book is a groundbreaking volume that responds to the growing demand for evidence-based approaches to Rural Communication Services (RCS). Published by FAO and IAMCR, the book presents theoretical foundations and real-world case studies that demonstrate how smallholder farmers use media to improve livelihoods and how supportive policy environments can be fostered. The twelve chapters address three key dimensions: 1. The need for theory-based action research; 2. The importance of equality and inclusiveness in balancing digital and non-digital communication; and 3. The integrated role of capacity building, infrastructure, institutionalization, and policy support.
The book showcases how theory and practice converge to operationalize inclusive rural communication systems that empower communities and enable collaborative change. Notably, Chapter One is authored by a member of the TRG Social Capital team, exploring the participatory testing of the Digital Farmer Field School (DFFS) in Enrekang. This contribution was recognized with an award from FAO, affirming its significance in advancing inclusive, community-driven innovation in rural development.
