Selangor, Malaysia – November 21, 2024 Students of the Faculty of Public Health, Hasanuddin University (FKM Unhas) gained valuable experience through participation in laboratory activities at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This activity involved ten students: A. Aulia Mukarrama, Alya Putri Sangker, Hadela Pratiwi S., Muh. Faiz Syafrillah, Amira Fatiha Ahmad, Angela Indriani Ekaputri, A. Medinasari Diva Amaska Putri, Yusron Afdal Mahdy, Siti Haliza Amelia Moeis, and Faradilla Taufik Nala.
This program is one of the strategic steps of FKM Unhas in strengthening student competence through international collaboration. During this visit, students were involved in two laboratory sessions with a focus on environmental health and food analysis, providing an opportunity to understand and practice the application of public health science firsthand.
Session 1: Monitoring and Analysis in Environmental Health
The first session took place at Makmal Kesekitaran, where students were taught food extraction techniques for further analysis. This activity aimed to provide insight into relevant food analysis methods to ensure the safety and quality of foodstuffs such as :
Biscuits,
Raw fish,
Nuts,
Chocolate powder, and more.
The initial step involves using a mortar and pestle to crush the sample into small particles. After the crushing process, the samples are dissolved using ethanol, allowing the extraction of important components that will be further analyzed.
This process provides an in-depth understanding of healthy and safe food management, supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which is to ensure good health and well-being.
Session 2: Air Quality Analysis
The second session was conducted at Makmal Kesihatan Komuniti & Pencemaran Udara, focusing on air quality measurements, specifically gas levels such as:
Carbon dioxide (CO2), and
Oxygen (O2).
Students used advanced gas monitoring equipment to measure air quality in several locations, including:
Laboratory rooms,
Department rooms, and
Public lecture halls.
Each group took measurements every 30 seconds for 10 minutes at each location, generating accurate data on air pollution levels. This data provides insight into the environmental conditions of the campus and how polluted air can impact human health.
