Austria—TRG Postharvest Metabo-Engineering participated in and supported the implementation of the “Long Night Research” activity. The event was held on 24 April 2026 at the Institute of Chemical, Environmental and Bioscience Engineering, Technology University of Vienna (TU Wien), Austria. Through an open and interactive exhibition format, the activity aimed to bring scientific knowledge closer to the public and create opportunities for direct communication between researchers and society.
     Long Night Research was organized with the objective of disseminating research outcomes generated in laboratories and universities to the wider community through exhibition-based communication methods that are accessible, engaging, and easy to understand. Rather than limiting scientific findings to academic publications and formal scientific forums, this initiative transformed research into an interactive public experience where visitors could observe, ask questions, and explore how scientific innovation contributes to everyday life.
     The event involved participants from various groups, including children, teenagers, and university students from other institutions, creating an inclusive environment for learning and dialogue across generations. Visitors had the opportunity to explore scientific demonstrations, interact directly with researchers, observe laboratory-based innovations, and gain insights into ongoing research activities conducted within the university environment.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the presentation of research related to natural pigments and their connection to daily life, sustainable materials, and biological phenomena. Through interactive posters and hands-on demonstrations, visitors were introduced to how laboratory research can be translated into practical knowledge that is relevant and understandable for the public. One of the featured topics presented research on sustainable colors for textile design, demonstrating the potential use of plant-derived pigments as environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional synthetic dyes.
In addition, visitors were introduced to research exploring the relationship between plant pigments and biological systems, including explanations about L-DOPA, a compound recognized as a precursor in the formation of betalain pigments in plants and also known for its broader biological relevance. Through this scientific perspective, participants were encouraged to understand that naturally occurring compounds extend beyond visual characteristics and play important roles in complex biological processes.
The exhibition also presented engaging scientific discussions through questions such as “Is red always red?” and “Is yellow perceived the same way?” These concepts were used to introduce different groups of natural pigments, including anthocyanins, carotenoids, and betalains, while demonstrating how color expression can change depending on environmental conditions such as pH and how colors may be perceived differently across living systems. By combining visual communication with direct interaction, visitors from different age groups were able to better understand that color is not only an aesthetic element but also the result of dynamic chemical and biological processes.
Throughout the event, complex scientific concepts were communicated through visual exhibits, simple explanations, and direct engagement activities designed to improve public understanding of research processes and outcomes. This approach emphasized that science is not confined to laboratories but can become a valuable source of knowledge that supports social development and encourages curiosity among communities with diverse educational backgrounds.
This initiative also demonstrated a strong commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By expanding access to knowledge and creating opportunities for communities to engage with innovation and future economic opportunities, the activity contributed to SDG 1: No Poverty. Through inclusive educational experiences and broader public access to scientific learning, the program strongly supported SDG 4: Quality Education. Most importantly, the event represented SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the importance of collaboration between universities, researchers, and society in accelerating sustainable development through knowledge exchange and public participation.
Overall, Long Night Research became more than a public exhibition—it served as a meaningful platform that connected research and society, strengthened public engagement with science, and demonstrated how knowledge becomes more impactful when shared openly and inclusively.
