Austria—As part of our commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education—education, research, and community service—TRG Postharvest Metabo-Engineering conducted an international activity entitled Plant Extraction. The program was carried out from 3–14 November 2025 at the Institute of Chemical, Environmental and Bioscience Engineering, Technology University of Vienna (TU Wien), Austria.
On April 21, 2025, a research team led by Mrs. Olly Sanny Hutabarat and representatives from the TRG (Technology Research Group) conducted a field visit to PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi, a leading coffee processing company located in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi. The purpose of this visit was to collect samples of coffee silver skin, a by-product generated during the roasting process, for further analysis and potential research development.
PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi is well known as a prominent exporter and processor of high-quality Arabica coffee, particularly Toraja coffee, which is globally recognized for its unique flavor and aroma. The company has operated for several decades and implements sustainable farming practices in collaboration with local farmers, promoting environmental stewardship and economic empowerment in the region.
During the visit, the team was given the opportunity to observe the production process, engage in discussions with the technical staff, and collect necessary materials for laboratory testing. This initiative is part of a broader research project focused on the valorization of coffee by-products, with the aim of supporting sustainable innovations in the agroindustrial sector.
On April 11, 2025, a significant milestone was achieved by one of the members of the Thematic Research Group (TRG) when they were officially awarded research funding under the Beginner Lecturer Research Grant (Penelitian Dosen Pemula) scheme of Universitas Hasanuddin for the year 2025. 📅 February 20, 2025 – The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) at Universitas Hasanuddin held a Funding Socialization and Contract Signing Ceremony for the TRG Scheme Batch 1 – Hasanuddin University Research Grant 2025 in the LPPM Meeting Room. This event marked a significant step in strengthening research development at Unhas by facilitating the implementation of funded research projects.
The highlight of the event was the official contract signing by the Chairperson of the Thematic Research Group (TRG), ensuring the execution of research projects in 2024. One of the key research initiatives under this scheme is titled:
🔬 “Utilization of Arabica and Robusta Coffee Silverskin as Dietary Fiber Material for Zero-Waste Products.”
This research focuses on utilizing coffee silverskin—an underutilized byproduct from coffee processing—as a source of dietary fiber, promoting sustainability through a zero-waste approach. The study aims to develop innovative applications for coffee silverskin in the food industry, aligning with global trends in circular economy and waste reduction.
The socialization session provided researchers with crucial insights into funding mechanisms, reporting procedures, and expectations for project implementation. It also emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering impactful and sustainable research that contributes to scientific advancements and societal development.
Through this initiative, Universitas Hasanuddin reaffirms its dedication to supporting high-quality research and encouraging collaboration between academia and industry.
