Makassar, 2026 — Dr. Hillman Wirawan and his research team from Universitas Hasanuddin are currently developing a research project focusing on the evaluation of abusive supervisory behaviors in a cross-cultural context. The project, entitled “Evaluating Abusive Supervisory Behaviors Across Cultures: A Rasch Comparison of Indonesian and Western Samples,” aims to examine how supervisory behaviors perceived as abusive are interpreted by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. This study is particularly important because most theories and measurement instruments related to abusive supervision have been developed in Western countries, while their applicability in Asian cultural settings, including Indonesia, still requires further investigation.
In today’s increasingly interconnected global workplace, multinational organizations face challenges in understanding how cultural differences shape employees’ perceptions of leadership behaviors. Actions considered inappropriate or harmful in one culture may not necessarily be perceived in the same way by individuals from another cultural background. Therefore, this study employs the Rasch Measurement Model to compare the measurement characteristics of abusive supervision items across Indonesian and Western samples. This approach enables researchers to determine whether the instrument demonstrates equivalent levels of validity and reliability across different cultural groups.
The expected outcome of this research is the provision of empirical evidence regarding measurement equivalence in abusive supervision scales across cultures. Such findings can assist academics and practitioners in developing more accurate instruments for assessing negative leadership behaviors in diverse organizational contexts. Furthermore, the study is expected to contribute to the advancement of global leadership theories by promoting a more inclusive and culturally sensitive understanding of leadership dynamics.
From a sustainable development perspective, this research is closely aligned with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through its efforts to foster healthier and more productive work environments, as well as SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by supporting the development of ethical, fair, and accountable leadership practices within modern organizations.

Description
This study aims to identify the main themes in building the concept of quality in weaving  micro/small/medium enterprises (MSMEs). Using the systematic literature review method and Theo Van Leeuwen\'s social semiotic theory, this study interprets the meaning of traditional weaving based on the region of origin, interpretation of sign readers, and exchange of meaning through semiotic resources.
Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with weavers and other stakeholders. The results of the study indicate that quality in weaving MSMEs can be interpreted as:
- Commitment to continual process improvement,
- Honesty and respect for culture and nature,
- Reputation,
- Investment in human resources (HR),Synergy, and Compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
The Total Quality Management (TQM) approach is considered less effective for weaving MSMEs due to the simplicity of their governance. However, the quality aspect remains closely related to HR, production, and management. In addition, mastery of information technology by MSME managers can strengthen the meaning of quality in organizational culture, improve performance, and encourage sustainable competitive advantage.
