Tuna fisheries play a pivotal role in the economic development of many coastal nations, particularly those in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. As a highly valued seafood commodity, tuna not only supports local livelihoods through fishing and processing activities but also contributes significantly to national economies through exports and job creation. The global demand for tuna, driven by both the culinary market and the growing popularity of seafood, has led to enhanced investments in sustainable fishing practices, technological advancements, and the establishment of management frameworks aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of tuna stocks.
Moreover, tuna fisheries have the potential to advance socio-economic objectives, including poverty alleviation, food security, and community resilience. However, the sector faces challenges such as overfishing, illegal fishing practices, and environmental concerns, which necessitate coordinated efforts among governments, industry stakeholders, and international organizations. By prioritizing sustainable practices and fostering responsible management, tuna fisheries can continue to be a cornerstone of economic development while preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.
Mission
Develop research, education and scientific publication collaboration with various partners related to tuna fisheries and the development of their economic aspects
AIM
To implement and advocate for sustainable fishing practices that balance ecological preservation with economic benefits for tuna-dependent communities.
To strengthen research and development networks through collaboration with other outstanding universities, research institutions, and other partners both domestically and globally.
To foster cooperation among stakeholders (fishers, policymakers, conservationists, researchers) to create and enforce policies that protect tuna stocks and marine biodiversity.
To advance research on tuna populations (fishing ground, migration and abundance), ecosystems, and socio-economic impacts, driving innovative solutions that align conservation with economic growth.
To create robust systems for tracking tuna stocks and marine ecosystem health, enabling adaptive management in response to environmental and socio-economic changes.
To improve market access for sustainably sourced tuna products, promoting value-added processing and fair trade practices for the benefit of fishers and consumers.Increasing the productivity of international research, teaching and publications related to tuna fisheries and their economic development through collaboration with various partners
