About ForHWM

Introduction

The Forest Hydrology and Watershed Management Research Group focuses on watershed management in the context of climate change and sustainable forest ecosystem management. Based at the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Hasanuddin, the group leverages geospatial approaches, hydrological modeling, remote sensing, and Geo-AI technology to understand hydrological dynamics, water resource management, and ecosystem sensitivity within watersheds. Given the increasing frequency and intensity of hydrometeorological disasters due to climate change, our research aims to develop innovative solutions that support sustainable watershed management. The group also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically in clean water management (SDG 6), climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and resilient communities (SDG 11).

Vision

To become a leading center for research in forest hydrology and watershed management in Indonesia, making significant contributions to understanding, mitigating, and adapting to the impacts of climate change while supporting sustainable natural resource management at local, national, and global levels.

Our Mission

We have 5 missions:

  1. Developing Technology-Based Research: Utilize geospatial technology, remote sensing, hydrological modeling, and Geo-AI to gather comprehensive data on watershed ecosystem dynamics and climate change impacts.

  2. Providing Innovative Solutions: Develop methods and tools for climate change mitigation and adaptation applicable to watershed and forest management.

  3. Strengthening Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Build strategic partnerships with researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to create sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.

  4. Supporting the Achievement of SDGs: Actively contribute to the achievement of SDGs, particularly those related to climate, land ecosystems, and clean water management, through impactful research.

  5. Raising Public Awareness: Educate the public and stakeholders on the importance of sustainable watershed management and the impacts of climate change.

Sub-theme Research

Land Cover Change Modeling and its Impact on Ecosystem

Land Cover Change Modeling and its Impact on Ecosystem is a research sub-theme that integrates aspects of land cover change modeling with the analysis of its impact on ecosystems. The main focus of this sub-theme is to understand how land cover change can be modeled using various spatial modeling techniques and analyze its consequences on ecosystem structure and function. The use of remote sensing technology, geographic information systems (GIS), and machine learning methods are important tools in developing predictive models that can forecast future change trends.

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation is a research sub-theme that addresses strategies and efforts to cope with and adapt to climate change. This sub-theme focuses on two main approaches to responding to the challenges of global climate change. Mitigation relates to efforts to reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions, while adaptation focuses on adjusting natural and human systems to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.

Natural Disaster Risk Analysis and Climate Change

Natural Disaster Risk Analysis and Climate Change is a research sub-theme that examines the relationship between natural disaster risk analysis and climate change. It emphasizes understanding how climate change affects the frequency, intensity and spatial distribution of natural disasters, and how this impacts disaster risk assessment and management.

Sustainable Water Resource Management

Sustainable Water Resource Management is a research sub-theme that discusses the sustainable management of water resources by considering environmental, social, and economic aspects. This sub-theme is becoming increasingly critical given the increasing pressure on water resources due to population growth, urbanization, climate change and intensification of economic activities. Research in this context focuses on developing an integrated approach to water resources management, covering both water quantity and quality aspects. This includes water balance analysis, evaluation of water availability and demand, and development of strategies to optimize water use across different sectors such as agriculture, industry and domestic. The watershed management approach is an important component in ensuring the sustainability of water resources.

Sustainable Urban Development and Regional Planning

Sustainable Urban Development and Regional Planning is a research sub-theme that examines the planning and development of cities and regions with sustainability principles. This sub-theme emphasizes the balance between physical development, social welfare, and environmental sustainability in the context of urban development and regional planning. In the aspect of sustainable urban development, research focuses on developing the concept of cities that are environmentally friendly, efficient in resource use, and resilient to climate change. This includes integrated spatial planning, sustainable transportation systems, energy efficiency in buildings, waste and water management, and green open space development. The smart city concept is also an integral part of efforts to optimize urban functions through the integration of technology and data.
