The rapid evolution of digital communication has significantly transformed linguistic behaviors among the youth, particularly in their engagement with various social media platforms. In many educational contexts, such as SMA Negeri 8 Bulukumba, there is a growing concern regarding the erosion of formal language boundaries as students increasingly adopt informal, expressive, and often impolite digital registers in inappropriate settings. This phenomenon reflects a lack of situational awareness and linguistic competence in adapting language varieties to specific communication contexts. To address this gap, a community service initiative was implemented to cultivate linguistic awareness and digital literacy, ensuring students can navigate the complexities of modern communication with ethical responsibility.
This program utilized the Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework, which emphasizes active engagement through a cyclical process of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The intervention began with a preliminary assessment via pre-tests and field observations to map the students’ baseline linguistic awareness and identify common patterns of language misuse in digital spaces. By involving students directly in the identification of the problem, the program ensured that the subsequent educational modules were tailored to their specific needs and social realities, fostering a sense of ownership over their linguistic development.
The core of the intervention involved the delivery of educational content through multi-modal media, including instructional videos that illustrated the nuanced application of language varieties in diverse digital and professional contexts. Interactive discussions and case studies were conducted where students analyzed and rectified impolite or inappropriate digital utterances, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Furthermore, the program integrated local cultural values such as sipakatau (mutual respect) and sipakalebbi (mutual honoring) as the ethical foundation for linguistic etiquette, ensuring that modern communication remains rooted in cultural integrity.
The results of the program indicated a significant improvement in students’ linguistic competence and ethical awareness. Post-test evaluations and qualitative reflections revealed that a majority of participants developed a heightened sensitivity toward linguistic politeness in digital environments. Furthermore, a substantial number of students expressed an increased interest in producing positive literary or educational content, demonstrating a shift from being passive consumers of digital media to becoming active, constructive contributors to the digital discourse. This shift underscores the effectiveness of interactive and context-based pedagogical approaches in language training.
In terms of global development goals, this initiative aligns directly with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. By promoting linguistic literacy and critical thinking skills, the program empowers students to succeed in a globalized society where effective communication is a prerequisite for academic and professional advancement. The focus on ethical communication and the mitigation of verbal aggression also supports SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by fostering an inclusive and respectful social environment that starts with the way individuals interact in both physical and virtual spaces.
Ultimately, this community service project serves as a strategic model for integrating sociolinguistic awareness into the secondary education curriculum. The success of the program suggests that addressing language variety is not merely a matter of grammatical correctness, but a fundamental component of social and digital citizenship. By equipping the younger generation with the tools to use language appropriately across various media, educational institutions can play a pivotal role in maintaining the quality of national discourse and preserving the cultural values that underpin social harmony.
