Exploring Middle Holocene Burial and Cultural Dynamics at Liang Sumpang Karoro 1, Maros, Indonesia
Description

The research focuses on archaeological discoveries at Liang Sumpang Karoro 1, a cave site in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study examines the cultural practices of the Toalean people during the Middle and Late Holocene, shedding light on mortuary rituals, lithic technology, and faunal exploitation. Key findings include:

  1. Secondary Human Burial Practices: A well-preserved Middle Holocene burial associated with Maros points and ochre traces reveals intricate mortuary rituals and symbolic behaviors.
  2. Lithic Assemblage: The site features diverse lithic tools, including backed microliths and Maros points, made predominantly from volcanic materials, which provide insights into Toalean technological adaptations.
  3. Faunal Analysis: Evidence of dietary patterns shows reliance on endemic species like the Celebes warty pig and anoa, with a notable shift in subsistence strategies over time.
  4. Cultural Interaction: The co-occurrence of Toalean lithic traditions and Austronesian pottery in the Late Holocene indicates potential cultural exchanges and long-distance interactions.

Significance: The findings contribute to understanding the cultural transitions and interactions in Holocene Southeast Asia, emphasizing the dynamic interplay between indigenous Toalean populations and incoming Austronesian groups. The research underscores the region\'s rich archaeological heritage and its role in the broader narrative of human adaptation and cultural innovation.

This project integrates stratigraphic analysis, radiocarbon dating, and artifact studies to offer a comprehensive view of prehistoric lifeways, situating Liang Sumpang Karoro 1 as a pivotal site for exploring Southeast Asia\'s ancient cultural complexity.
