Who We Are
The Prehistoric Population Dynamics Research Group (Prepodyreg) at Universitas Hasanuddin brings together an interdisciplinary team of archaeologists, geneticists, paleoenvironmental researchers, and cultural historians. With diverse expertise and a shared passion for uncovering the intricacies of prehistoric human populations, we strive to advance the understanding of human adaptation, migration, and cultural evolution.

Prof. Dr. Akin Duli
Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Prof. Duli specializes in prehistoric archaeology, focusing on the cultural history and burial practices of ancient societies in Indonesia. His notable work includes the discovery and analysis of the “Besse” skeleton, providing significant insights into early human activities in the region.
Contributions: As the team leader, Prof. Duli guides research initiatives exploring human migration patterns, technological innovations, and cultural developments in prehistoric Indonesia.
Dr. Muhammad Nur, M.A.
Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Dr. Nur’s research focuses on prehistoric archaeology, with an emphasis on lithic technology and early human subsistence strategies. He has contributed to studies on stone flake artifacts and their implications for understanding prehistoric tool industries in Sulawesi.
Contributions: Dr. Nur plays a pivotal role in analyzing archaeological findings, particularly stone tools, to reconstruct the technological evolution of early human societies in the region.
Dr. Supriadi, M.A.
Associate Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Dr. Supriadi’s interests lie in social archaeology and the management of archaeological resources. He has conducted research on historical archaeology, including studies on fortifications and their roles in regional power dynamics.

Yusriana, S.S., M.A.
Secretary of the Department of Archaeology and Lecturer at Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Yusriana specializes in cultural resource management, ethnoarchaeology, underwater archaeology, and the intersection of archaeology and tourism. Her work includes studies on the preservation of rock art and the development of archaeological sites as tourist destinations.

Suryatman, S.S., M.Hum.
Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.

He has examined incised stone artifacts within Middle Holocene burial contexts in South Sulawesi, contributing to the understanding of symbolic behavior in prehistoric societies.

A. Muh. Saiful, S.S., M.A.
Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Andi Muh. Saiful’s research focuses on prehistoric archaeology, zooarchaeology, experimental archaeology, and landscape archaeology. He has investigated human-animal interactions and subsistence strategies in prehistoric Sulawesi, including studies on faunal remains from archaeological sites.

Dott. Erwin Mansyur
Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Erwin specializes in archaeometry, bioarchaeology, environmental studies, and conservation. His research includes the conservation of bronze artifacts and studies on Islamic cultural acculturation in South Sulawesi.

Nur Ihsan, S.S., M.Hum.
Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin.
Expertise: Nur Ihsan’s interests include conflict archaeology and geospatial archaeology. He has participated in various workshops and training programs focused on cultural heritage conservation.
Contributions: He aids in the analysis of archaeological sites related to conflict and contributes to the group’s efforts in cultural heritage preservation and dissemination of research findings.

Prof. Dr. Zuliskandar Ramli
Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Expertise: Prof. Ramli specializes in archaeology and early history, with a focus on archaeological science, environmental studies, and Malay world heritage and culture. He holds a Ph.D. in Archaeology from UKM and has conducted extensive research on ancient trade, particularly involving beads in Peninsular Malaysia, and has led significant archaeological excavations, including the discovery of 16,000-year-old human skeletons in the Nenggiri Valley.
Contributions: Prof. Ramli provides invaluable insights into cultural diffusion and technological innovations in prehistoric societies, enhancing the group’s research on human adaptation and cultural evolution.
Prof. Dr. R. Cecep Eka Permana
Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia.
Expertise: Prof. Permana specializes in the study of prehistoric art and symbolism, with a particular focus on rock art and its cultural implications in Indonesia. His work involves analyzing symbolic artifacts and understanding their roles in the belief systems of ancient communities.

Rintaro Ono, Ph.D.
Associate Professor at the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku), Osaka, Japan.
Expertise: Dr. Ono is a maritime archaeologist with a focus on the prehistoric maritime adaptations and maritime networks in Island Southeast Asia. His research includes studies on the development of fishing technologies and the role of maritime networks in the spread of Austronesian-speaking populations.
Contributions: Dr. Ono collaborates on research concerning maritime adaptations and the role of seafaring in prehistoric human migrations, providing a broader understanding of the maritime aspects of population dynamics in the region.
Shaiful Idzwan S, Ph.D.
Lecturer at the Center for Research in History, Politics, and International Affairs (SPHEA), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Expertise: Dr. Shahidan is an archaeologist with extensive training in field archaeology across Europe and Southeast Asia. He holds a Ph.D. from Universiti Sains Malaysia (2023) and has been involved in archaeological research in Peninsular and East Malaysia for over 15 years. His work includes significant contributions to the preparation of the Lenggong Valley dossier for UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription.
Contributions: Dr. Shahidan collaborates on projects focusing on regional history and prehistoric population interactions, bringing his expertise in archaeological research and heritage conservation to the group.
Mika Rizki Puspaningrum, S.Si, M.T., Ph.D.
Lecturer at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia.
Expertise: Dr. Puspaningrum’s research focuses on geosciences with applications in archaeology, including paleoenvironmental reconstructions and geochemical analyses to understand ancient human-environment interactions.
Contributions: Dr. Puspaningrum collaborates on integrating geological and environmental data with archaeological findings, aiding in the reconstruction of prehistoric landscapes and understanding human adaptation to environmental changes.
Dr. Hasanuddin, M.A.
Researcher at the Research Center for Prehistoric and Historic Archaeology, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Indonesia.
Expertise: Dr. Hasanuddin is a preeminent scholar in prehistoric archaeology, with a focus on the megalithic cultures of Indonesia. He completed his undergraduate studies at Universitas Hasanuddin in 1989, earned his Master’s degree from Universitas Indonesia in 2000, and obtained his Doctorate in Archaeology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2015. His research encompasses the study of ancient megalithic sites, traditional fortifications, and the typology and ornamentation of ancient Islamic tombs in South Sulawesi.
Contributions: Dr. Hasanuddin’s extensive experience in prehistoric archaeology and his in-depth knowledge of megalithic traditions significantly enhance the group’s research into early human societies and cultural practices in Indonesia.
Syahruddin Mansyur, M.Hum.
Researcher at the Research Center for Environmental Archaeology, Maritime Archaeology, and Cultural Sustainability, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Indonesia.
Expertise: Mr. Mansyur specializes in historical archaeology, with a particular emphasis on landscape and environmental archaeology, as well as maritime and trade history in Sulawesi, Maluku, and Eastern Indonesia. His scholarly work includes studies on European colonial fortifications in the Maluku Islands and the maritime traditions of the Wakatobi Islands.
Contributions: Mr. Mansyur’s expertise in maritime archaeology and his research on historical trade networks provide valuable insights into the seafaring and cultural exchange aspects of prehistoric population dynamics in the region.
