Advancing Post-Spine Surgery Recovery: Exploring Wound Care Effectiveness and Bacterial Colonization Dynamics

Makassar – In 2026, a collaborative academic initiative led by a team of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Hasanuddin, marked a significant step forward in clinical research and healthcare innovation. This activity, titled “Effectiveness of Wound Care on the Dynamics of Bacterial Colonization and Wound Healing Progress in Post-Spine Surgery Patients,” was conducted as part of a successfully awarded master’s thesis research grant. The program reflects a strong commitment to advancing evidence-based nursing practices while fostering academic excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University, involving a focused research design with a total of three participants and implemented in 2026. Despite the limited sample size, the research emphasized depth, precision, and rigorous observation to better understand how wound care interventions influence bacterial colonization patterns and the healing trajectory in post-operative spine patients.

This initiative holds particular relevance to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Most prominently, it aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by aiming to improve patient recovery outcomes and reduce post-surgical complications through optimized wound care strategies. By generating scientific evidence that can inform clinical protocols, the project contributes to safer and more effective healthcare delivery systems.

Equally important is its connection to SDG 4: Quality Education, as the activity serves as a platform for experiential learning and research capacity building among students.
