Every year, thousands of babies around the world are born with orofacial clefts, a condition that includes cleft lip, cleft palate, or both. These conditions occur when the tissues of the lip or palate fail to fuse properly during early pregnancy. Although modern surgery can correct many of these problems, the impact on feeding, speech, growth, and psychological well-being can be significant for both children and their families. Understanding why these conditions occur is therefore crucial—not only for treatment but also for prevention.
