On May 19, 2026, the Faculty of Animal Science at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) hosted a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) entitled “Calcined Eggshell Meal as a Mineral Supplement: Effects on Dairy Cow Productivity and Milk Quality.” This hybrid event took place at the CP Smart Room, Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University, and was simultaneously accessible via Zoom Meeting, ensuring broad participation and inclusivity.

The primary objective of the activity was to explore collaborative research opportunities that transform agricultural waste—specifically eggshells—into valuable mineral supplements for dairy cows. This initiative aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable livestock production, reduce waste, and enhance food security. By addressing both environmental and agricultural challenges, the discussion directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These goals emphasize the importance of eradicating poverty through innovative agricultural practices, fostering knowledge exchange among students and researchers, and strengthening international collaboration.

The event gathered 14 participants, including distinguished academics and students. From Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ambo Ako, M. Sc., IPU, Chair of the Organic Dairy Farming System, and Dr. Agr. Ir. Renny Fatmyah Utamy, S. Pt., member of the TRG, contributed their expertise. In addition, seven students from Hasanuddin University and four students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) actively engaged in the dialogue. The international partnership was further enriched by the presence of Muhammad Mijanur Rahman, Ph.D., from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, who shared insights on cross-border research collaboration.
Among the student participants, Zyahrul Ramadan, Doctoral Student in Animal Science, Faculty of Animal Science Hasanuddin University, and Ritah Parinding from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, played key roles in presenting preliminary findings and perspectives on the potential of calcined eggshell meal. Their contributions highlighted the importance of empowering young researchers to take part in solving pressing agricultural and environmental issues, thereby reinforcing SDG 4 (Quality Education).
The discussion emphasized that calcined eggshell meal, rich in calcium and other minerals, can serve as a sustainable supplement to improve dairy cow productivity and milk quality. By utilizing waste materials, this approach not only reduces environmental burdens but also creates economic opportunities for farming communities, directly supporting SDG 1 (No Poverty). Furthermore, the collaboration between Unhas and UMS exemplifies the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), demonstrating how international cooperation can accelerate scientific innovation and practical solutions for global challenges.
In conclusion, the FGD successfully fostered dialogue among experts, students, and international partners, laying the groundwork for future research collaborations. The initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable livestock development, environmental stewardship, and academic excellence. By integrating waste management with animal nutrition, the project embodies a holistic approach to achieving the SDGs, ensuring that science and education continue to serve as powerful tools for building a more resilient and equitable future.
