TRG Maritime Anthropology Research Group (MARG) Unhas and Antropos Indonesia Foundation Hold Collaborative Discussion on Maritime Literacy

Makassar, May 3, 2025 — The Chair of the TRG Maritime Anthropology Research Group (MARG) at Universitas Hasanuddin, Prof. Dr. Munsi Lampe, M.A., has established a strategic collaboration with the Antropos Indonesia Foundation through a discussion event entitled “Maritime Literacy: Exploring the Culture, Knowledge, and Sovereignty of the Indonesian Seas.”

Held virtually, the discussion attracted enthusiastic participation from young researchers, students, and cultural activists across South Sulawesi. This event reflects a shared commitment between TRG MARG and the Antropos Indonesia Foundation to strengthen the cultural-based maritime knowledge ecosystem and promote public literacy regarding Indonesia’s maritime identity and challenges.

In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Munsi Lampe, M.A. emphasized the importance of a transdisciplinary approach in understanding the sea as a living space, a knowledge system, and a site of geopolitical contestation. “The sea is not merely a resource—it is a field of social relations and a cultural symbol that must be deeply interpreted,” he stated.

The Antropos Indonesia Foundation, which has been actively involved in the Cultural Advancement movement—particularly through this program supported by the South Sulawesi Language Office—also contributed a reflective perspective on the need to mainstream the narratives of coastal and small-island communities within national development policies. The discussion became a platform for cross-network dialogue among researchers and activists, mapping out future collaborative strategies.

This collaboration is expected to pave the way for joint research programs, scholarly publications, and advocacy initiatives on maritime cultural literacy across various regions in Indonesia.
