Maritime Knowledge, Ocean Cosmology, and Cultural Resilience within the Maritime Continent of Indonesia (BMI)
This sub-theme explores indigenous knowledge systems and oceanic cosmologies that are rooted in the geographical and cultural concept of the Maritime Continent of Indonesia (Benua Maritim Indonesia). The focus includes ritual practices, cosmological narratives, customary marine laws, and the cultural mechanisms that enable coastal communities to maintain resilience in the face of environmental change, globalization, and socio-cultural transformation.
Marine Governance, Organizational Culture, and Local Institutions
This sub-theme examines the institutional and organizational dynamics of maritime communities in managing marine resources and coastal spaces. It focuses on the role of customary institutions, fisherfolk associations, community forums, and local governance actors in sustaining marine ecosystems and ensuring social-ecological justice. Topics also include power relations, marine spatial conflicts, and the adaptation of local institutions to national policies and global pressures
Media and Maritime Culture
This sub-theme investigates the role of media—both traditional and digital—in shaping, representing, and transforming maritime culture. The focus covers visual storytelling in coastal societies, community-based digital narratives, ocean-centered cultural diplomacy, and communication strategies used in environmental advocacy, marine tourism promotion, and the articulation of maritime identity in glocal (global-local) contexts.
