Strengthening International Collaboration for Sustainable Leather Technology: ELEGTEC Consortium Project Meeting at Hasanuddin University
Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) successfully hosted the Enhancing Sustainable and Green Leather Technology in Indonesia (ELEGTEC) Consortium Project Meeting at its Tamalanrea Campus, reaffirming its commitment to advancing sustainable leather technology through international collaboration, academic excellence, and capacity building. The meeting served as a strategic platform for consortium members to evaluate project implementation, strengthen institutional cooperation, and coordinate future activities that will contribute to the modernization of Indonesia’s leather sector.
The consortium meeting was primarily organized to review the overall progress of the ELEGTEC Project. Discussions focused on project management, financial administration, and the implementation status of each Work Package. Representatives from EGE University led comprehensive sessions on project governance and financial management, ensuring that all consortium members remained aligned with the objectives and reporting standards of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) program. Meanwhile, representatives from Hasanuddin University presented their preparedness to organize specialized training programs for industry stakeholders and university students, demonstrating their commitment to successfully implementing the Work Package assigned to UNHAS.
The meeting was held at the Hasanuddin University Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Indonesia, on 24–26 June 2026, with the participation of 25 participants representing universities and institutional partners involved in the ELEGTEC consortium. The event brought together experts, academics, and project coordinators to exchange knowledge, monitor project achievements, and develop strategies for the next phase of implementation.
The consortium was honored by the participation of distinguished international partners, including Prof. Mete Mutlu and Prof. Hasan from EGE University (TĂĽrkiye), Prof. Maurizia from the University of Pisa (Italy), and Prof. Vera Lymperopoulou from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. Their expertise provided valuable insights into sustainable leather processing technologies, project management, curriculum development, and international collaboration. Their active engagement also strengthened the long-term partnership between Indonesian and European institutions, creating opportunities for future research collaboration, academic exchange, and technology transfer.
Beyond project evaluation, the meeting emphasized the importance of integrating environmentally friendly leather technologies into higher education and industrial practices. Participants discussed innovative approaches for reducing environmental impacts in leather processing while improving product quality, industrial competitiveness, and workforce readiness. The planned training programs for students and industry practitioners are expected to accelerate knowledge dissemination and support the adoption of sustainable technologies within Indonesia’s leather industry.
The ELEGTEC Consortium Project directly contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It advances SDG 4: Quality Education by strengthening academic capacity, developing innovative learning programs, and enhancing practical competencies in sustainable leather technology. It also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through strong international collaboration among universities, research institutions, and industry partners across Indonesia and Europe. Furthermore, by promoting sustainable industrial innovation and improving workforce skills that contribute to economic opportunities, the project aligns with SDG 1: No Poverty, helping build more resilient livelihoods and supporting inclusive economic development.
Through collaborative planning, transparent project management, and shared scientific expertise, the ELEGTEC Consortium Meeting at Hasanuddin University demonstrates how international partnerships can accelerate innovation, strengthen higher education, and promote environmentally responsible industrial development. As the project moves forward, the consortium remains committed to producing meaningful impacts for academia, industry, and society while supporting Indonesia’s transition toward a more sustainable and globally competitive leather sector.
