Invasive Fish Surveillance in Lake Tempe: Strengthening Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation in South Sulawesi

The increasing spread of invasive alien species (IAS) in freshwater ecosystems has become a growing environmental concern, particularly in biodiversity-rich regions such as South Sulawesi. In response to this issue, a scientific monitoring activity entitled β€œMonitoring the Presence of Invasive Alien Fish Species in Freshwater Ecosystems of Lake Tempe, Wajo and Sidrap Regencies” was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of ecological changes occurring in the lake.

This activity took place in Danau’s lake, Wajo and Sidrap regency, South of Celebes, one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in the region, known for its ecological, economic, and social significance. Conducted on 1 February 2026, the program involved 15 participants, consisting of researchers and field assistants with expertise in aquatic ecology and fisheries science.

The primary objective of this initiative was to identify invasive fish species present in the freshwater ecosystem of South Sulawesi. Through systematic sampling and field observations, the team worked to document species composition and confirm the presence of non-native fish that may pose ecological threats. In addition, the study aimed to describe the spatial distribution and population abundance of invasive species across multiple sampling stations, providing insights into their spread and dominance patterns.

Another critical aspect of this monitoring activity was assessing the ecological impact of invasive species on native fish communities. The presence of invasive fish can disrupt local biodiversity through competition, predation, and habitat alteration. Therefore, this study also evaluated how these species influence the structure and diversity of indigenous fish populations in Lake Tempe.

Environmental parameters such as water quality, habitat conditions, and resource availability were also analyzed to understand the factors contributing to the successful establishment and expansion of invasive species. These findings are essential in predicting future invasion risks and formulating adaptive management strategies.

The outcomes of this activity are expected to support the development of science-based management recommendations aimed at protecting endemic fish species and ensuring the sustainability of local fisheries. This aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1: No Poverty, by safeguarding the livelihoods of local fishing communities; SDG 4: Quality Education, through the promotion of scientific research and knowledge dissemination; and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, by encouraging sustainable resource use and ecosystem resilience that indirectly supports energy sustainability in rural communities.

Overall, this monitoring effort represents a crucial step toward integrated freshwater ecosystem management. By combining scientific research with practical conservation strategies, it contributes not only to biodiversity protection but also to the long-term well-being of communities that depend on Lake Tempe as a vital natural resource.
