AMBioC Strengthens International Research Collaboration on Coastal Gleaning

MAKASSAR, Indonesia, 30 August 2026/AMBioC/–The Aquatic Management and Biodiversity Conservation Research Group (TRG AMBioC), Universitas Hasanuddin, held an online meeting with Dr. Shannon Switzer Swanson from California State University to discuss the preparation of a collaborative scientific article on coastal gleaning activities.

The meeting focused on strengthening the manuscript developed from field research on gleaning in a seagrass ecosystem. The study examines the participation of local community members in collecting marine organisms, the composition of harvested species, and the ecological and socioeconomic significance of this small-scale coastal activity. During the discussion, the research team reviewed the manuscript’s focus, analytical approach, and contribution to the broader understanding of human–coastal ecosystem interactions.

The collaborators agreed to further develop the manuscript for submission to ‘Anthropocene Coasts’, an international journal focusing on interactions between coastal environments and human activities.

The meeting involved 10 participants consisted by 4 researchers from hasanuddin University, one researcher from Universitas Muslim Indonesia, and one from AMBioC collaborator from California State University, United State. Additionally, also involved three undergraduate students, namely Rahmi Jalal, Nurlaely, Nur Afina and one master’s student, Andi Artika Ferawaty Taufiq, who participated in the research and manuscript-development process. Their involvement provided valuable experience in collaborative research, scientific data interpretation, academic discussion, and the preparation of an international publication.

This activity contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through research supporting the sustainable management of seagrass and coastal resources; SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international research collaboration; and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the active involvement of students in research and scientific publication.

This activity reflects TRG AMBioC’s continuing commitment to strengthening international research networks while providing meaningful opportunities for students to participate in globally connected research. The collaboration is expected to contribute to a better understanding of coastal gleaning and support the development of more inclusive and sustainable approaches to managing seagrass and coastal ecosystems.
