The ground beneath our feet is often overlooked, yet it holds the key to our planet’s thermal balance. On Juni 13, 2025, a transformative environmental movement took root at Universitas Hasanuddin. This initiative, titled “Aksi Lingkungan Conserved Soil Carbon,” was designed as a proactive response to the escalating global climate crisis. The core mission of the event was to implement Upaya Mitigasi dan Adaptasi Perubahan Iklim (Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Efforts) by focusing on the critical yet invisible process of carbon sequestration within the soil.

Soil is the second-largest active carbon store on Earth, after the oceans. When managed correctly, it acts as a massive “sink,” pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and locking it safely underground. A dedicated group of 35 orang, consisting of environmental researchers, student activists, and local land managers, gathered at Universitas Hasanuddin to translate complex soil science into tangible climate action. By enriching the soil organic matter, the participants worked to ensure that the campus grounds contribute to cooling the local microclimate while enhancing the earth’s natural ability to store greenhouse gases.

This activity is deeply intertwined with the global pursuit of SDG 1 (No Poverty). While soil carbon may seem like a purely technical metric, it is the foundation of food security and economic stability. Healthy, carbon-rich soil retains more moisture and nutrients, which is vital for the agricultural productivity that many local communities rely on for their livelihoods. By promoting soil conservation at Universitas Hasanuddin, we are advocating for land management practices that protect farmers from crop failure caused by extreme weather, thereby preventing the descent into climate-induced poverty.

Furthermore, the event served as a high-impact platform for SDG 4 (Quality Education). The 35 orang involved did not just participate in physical labor; they engaged in a deep-dive educational workshop on the chemistry of carbon cycles and the physics of soil structure. This “learning-by-doing” approach bridges the gap between theoretical classroom knowledge and real-world application. It equips the next generation of leaders with the scientific literacy required to navigate and solve the environmental challenges of the 21st century, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and environmental stewardship.

The collaboration between academic departments, local environmental groups, and the university administration demonstrated that systemic change requires a unified front. By sharing resources, technology, and expertise at Universitas Hasanuddin on Juni 13, 2025, we proved that localized actions, when supported by strong institutional partnerships, can have a global resonance.
