Makassar, Indonesia July 08 2026/PMN-RG/ – Imagine living with a chronic disease that requires daily attention—monitoring your blood sugar, managing your diet, remembering medications, and preventing complications. For millions of people with diabetes, this is not imagination it is reality. But what if all of these tasks could be supported by something already in your pocket?
A recent study highlights an innovative approach: a smartphone-based application designed to support education and self-care monitoring for people with diabetes. This research emphasizes how digital technology can transform health management into something more practical, accessible, and empowering .
Diabetes mellitus continues to rise globally, and Indonesia is no exception. Without proper management, it can lead to severe complications such as stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and even death. One key factor in controlling diabetes is self-care—the ability of individuals to manage their own health through knowledge, habits, and consistent monitoring. Unfortunately, many patients still struggle due to limited access to clear, structured, and continuous education.
This is where technology steps in.
The study developed educational content and monitoring features through a rigorous Delphi method, involving experts such as nurses, endocrinologists, nutritionists, and researchers. After three rounds of evaluation, the result was a well-structured system consisting of eight main menus and 43 carefully selected themes. These include essential features like blood sugar tracking, diet planning, medication reminders, physical activity monitoring, and even consultation forums with health professionals .
What makes this innovation powerful is not just the technology but its relevance. Unlike many existing health apps that only provide basic reminders, this model integrates education and monitoring in a comprehensive and user-friendly way. It is designed based on expert consensus and tailored to the real needs of patients, especially within the Indonesian context.
This approach aligns strongly with SDGs 3: Good Health and Well-being. By promoting accessible digital health tools, the innovation supports better disease management, reduces complications, and ultimately improves quality of life. It also contributes to reducing healthcare costs and increasing efficiency in health services, particularly in areas with limited access to medical facilities.
Moreover, the use of smartphone applications opens opportunities for continuous learning. Patients are not just passive recipients of care they become active participants in managing their own health. This empowerment is essential in tackling chronic diseases like diabetes, where daily decisions make a significant difference.
In a world where smartphones are increasingly widespread, especially in developing countries, this innovation represents a promising step forward. It shows that healthcare does not always need to be confined to hospitals it can be carried in our hands, guiding us every day.
