Makassar, Indonesia, July 08, 2026 /PMN-RG/ β Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, even though effective treatment has been available for decades. One of the biggest challenges is not the medicine itself it is making sure patients take their medication every day for several months without interruption. Missing doses can lead to treatment failure, drug resistance, and continued disease transmission.
Fortunately, a simple tool that millions of people already carry in their pockets may help solve this problem: the smartphone.
A recent systematic review found that mobile application-based interventions can significantly improve medication adherence among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Instead of relying solely on traditional face-to-face supervision, healthcare providers can now use digital technologies such as reminder applications, Video-Observed Therapy (VOT), medication reminder systems, smart pillboxes, and messaging platforms like WhatsApp to support patients throughout their treatment journey. These technologies remind patients to take their medicine, allow healthcare professionals to monitor treatment remotely, and provide rapid follow-up when doses are missed.
The review analyzed seven high-quality studies conducted in Indonesia, China, the United States, Peru, Moldova, and England. Most studies reported positive outcomes, showing improvements in medication adherence, treatment success, timely drug intake, and reduced missed doses. Some digital interventions also reduced the need for frequent clinic visits because healthcare providers could monitor patients remotely through secure mobile platforms.
This innovation is particularly important in regions where access to healthcare facilities is limited or where patients face transportation, financial, or work-related barriers. By bringing healthcare into the patient’s home through mobile technology, treatment becomes more convenient, more personalized, and easier to maintain. Digital health tools also strengthen communication between patients and healthcare providers, creating a stronger support system throughout the lengthy TB treatment process.
This evidence directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. One of the key targets of SDG 3 is ending the tuberculosis epidemic by improving prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. Mobile health technology represents a practical innovation that supports this global mission by improving treatment adherence, increasing treatment success, and helping reduce the spread of TB in communities.
Although digital applications cannot replace healthcare professionals, they can become valuable partners in delivering high-quality healthcare. Nurses, physicians, researchers, and policymakers should continue collaborating to develop user-friendly mobile health applications that are accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate. As smartphone ownership continues to grow worldwide, digital health interventions offer an exciting opportunity to make TB care more effective and equitable.
Sometimes, changing the future of global health does not require a breakthrough medicine. Sometimes, it simply begins with a daily reminder on a smartphone.
