Strengthening Maritime Anthropology: Universitas Andalas Visits Doctoral Program in Anthropology at Universitas Hasanuddin for Strategic Benchmarking

Makassar, August 4, 2025 – The Department of Anthropology at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Andalas (Unand), conducted an academic benchmarking visit to Universitas Hasanuddin as part of its preparatory efforts to establish a Doctoral Program (Ph.D.) in Anthropology.

Led by Prof. Dr.rer.soz. Nursyirwan Effendi and Prof. Dr. Lucky Zamzami, S.Sos., M.Soc.Sc., the visiting team was warmly received by the leadership of FISIP Universitas Hasanuddin, including the Chair of the Doctoral Program in Anthropology, the Head of the Department of Anthropology, and the internal quality assurance unit. The discussion, held in the Dean’s Meeting Room, focused on academic governance strategies, faculty development, and quality assurance mechanisms for doctoral-level education in anthropology.

The session also emphasized the strategic positioning of anthropology in Indonesia in responding to both global and local challenges—particularly the crucial role of maritime anthropology in supporting development initiatives rooted in the archipelagic character of the nation. The Doctoral Program in Anthropology at Universitas Hasanuddin, embedded within the research ecosystem of the Maritime Anthropology Research Group (TRG MARG), demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing ocean-based social knowledge that contributes to the broader vision of Benua Maritim Indonesia (BMI).

This visit marks an important milestone in fostering academic collaboration between two major institutions in western and eastern Indonesia. In the context of maritime studies, the visit opens opportunities for inter-island research collaborations, joint curriculum development on coastal cultures, and co-publications in the field of maritime anthropology and social sciences.

As part of TRG MARG’s development strategy, this initiative reinforces Universitas Hasanuddin’s position as a center of excellence for anthropological scholarship rooted in the socio-cultural dynamics of Indonesia’s maritime regions.
