The Study on the Potential Utilization of Swampland for Rice Cultivation is a scientific-based evidence study aimed at supporting the Minister of Agriculture’s policy in the program to increase rice production through extensification on swamplands.
This study was conducted to provide a document on the Potential Utilization of Swampland for Rice, which includes data from field surveys of swamplands and an optimization design plan for swamplands in locations deemed suitable for optimization. This document will serve as the basis for the implementation of swampland optimization construction and as a reference for policymakers in agricultural development planning in South Sulawesi Province. Swamplands, with their unique ecosystem, serve as multi-functional natural resources. However, their utilization requires a cautious and responsible approach to minimize environmental risks while maximizing agricultural productivity. South Sulawesi Province has been designated as one of the regions for the swampland-to-rice-field conversion program, covering four districts: Pinrang, Bone, Sidrap, and Wajo. These districts were selected because they are major rice production centers, but currently have a low cropping index, with rice planting occurring only once a year. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase and expand rice cultivation in these areas.
