Welcome to Oral Microbiome Research Group
The oral cavity is a highly complex environment responsible for receiving and processing food, with teeth serving an essential function in these activities. These structures are continually subjected to mechanical wear and chemical challenges, with the oral microbiome playing an important role in these processes. In healthy conditions, the tooth’s most vulnerable tissues microenvironment that influences the pulp and root canal system remain sealed off, preventing contact with both pathogens and normally harmless resident bacteria
Mission
To reduce root canal treatment failure by mapping, explaining, and clinically targeting the bacteria (and their biofilms) that drive primary and persistent endodontic infections, with a focus on microbial community structure, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance.
Aim
- Identify the composition and diversity of intracanal bacteria using molecular methods such as 16S rRNA PCR or next-generation sequencing.
- Analyze the distribution of bacteria in the apical third of the root canal primary infection.
- Evaluate the relationship between the microbiome profile and clinical conditions, such as primary apical periodontitis.
- Provide a scientific basis for developing more effective and evidence-based irrigation strategies, activation techniques, and intracanal medicaments.
