As a strategic step to strengthen international research collaboration in the field of nursing, the PELITA Project (Understanding the Education and Labor Market Consequences of Indonesia’s Quest to Become the World’s Leading Nurse Exporting Nation) was officially launched through a research meeting and kick-off workshop held at the Gran Melia Hotel Jakarta from January 3–7, 2026.
This activity is the result of a research collaboration between Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (Germany), Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Hasanuddin, and the Australian National University (Australia), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. This ambitious project is designed to gain a thorough understanding of the educational and labor market consequences of Indonesia’s efforts to become the world’s largest nurse-exporting nation.
The five-day workshop brought together research team members from various institutions. The event marked the beginning of cross-country collaboration in examining the complex dynamics of Indonesia’s nursing sector, ranging from educational aspects and graduate transitions into the labor market, to the phenomenon of nurse migration abroad.
The PELITA Project is expected to produce comprehensive, evidence-based research findings to support strategic policy-making in the health and employment sectors. Through a multidisciplinary approach and international cooperation, the project aims to make a significant contribution to strengthening the national nursing education system and enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesian nurses in the global market.
All activity costs, including transportation, accommodation, and other operational expenses, are fully covered by the Volkswagen Foundation grant, reflecting the high level of international commitment to the development of Indonesia’s nursing sector.
