KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — As part of an unwavering commitment to the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi—the three foundational pillars of Indonesian higher education encompassing education, research, and community service—the Legal Protection of Children’s Rights Research Group (LCPR-RG) recently extended its humanitarian outreach beyond national borders. Embarking on a meaningful cross-border initiative, the research group paid a goodwill visit to an orphanage in Malaysia. The core mission of this community service was to instill the values of an anti-violence culture, empowering young children to safely and confidently pursue their future dreams and aspirations.
This impactful cross-border engagement was a key component of a broader international youth empowerment program organized by Indonesia Youth Impact, which facilitates educational activities across both Malaysia and Singapore. The prestigious initiative brought together a diverse delegation of 20 selected representatives from various leading universities across Indonesia. Standing proudly at the forefront of this international mission was Mr. Afif Muhni, S.H., M.H., who represented the LCPR-RG and the Faculty of Law at Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas). His active participation underscored the university’s strong, proactive commitment to international legal advocacy, child protection, and global community engagement.
The intensive yet joyful program culminated in a deeply emotional and highly symbolic interactive activity. To inspire their future, the delegates encouraged the children to visualize their adulthood and write down their ultimate ambitions on colorful pieces of paper. With faces glowing with enthusiasm, the young participants carefully pasted their handwritten hopes onto a beautifully illustrated “Tree of Dreams.” Adding a powerful touch of international camaraderie, this symbolic tree was adorned with the national flags of Indonesia and Malaysia, alongside the official logo of Universitas Hasanuddin. This beautiful artwork served as a testament to bilateral kinship, shared hope, and cross-border academic support. The memorable day gracefully concluded with a heartwarming group photo session and the distribution of special educational gifts, prizes, and souvenirs, leaving the children with wide smiles and unforgettable memories.Â
Beyond its immediate educational impact, this international community engagement initiative powerfully represents a tangible commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program’s focus on personal hygiene and respectful behavioral development directly addresses SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), ensuring that the children understand how to maintain their physical health and positive mental attitudes.
Simultaneously, by inspiring these young minds to continuously learn and courageously chase their aspirations, the initiative strongly champions SDG 4 (Quality Education). Ultimately, these two foundational goals are intricately intertwined with SDG 5 (Gender Equality). By providing equal attention, identical educational resources, and the exact same safe space to dream for both boys and girls in the orphanage, the program reinforces the powerful message that every child—regardless of gender—has an equal right to a bright, violence-free future.
