Cultivating Planetary Health Leadership Through Global Nursing Education

As environmental challenges increasingly shape public health outcomes worldwide, the Enhancement Healthy Aging (EAGING) Research Group of the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University, is actively contributing to the advancement of planetary health education through an international collaborative research project entitled β€œA Cross-Sectional Observational Study to Develop an International Collaborative Education Program Based on Awareness and Interest in Planetary Health.” Bringing together researchers from Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, this initiative seeks to understand the awareness, perceptions, and educational needs of students and academics regarding planetary health, while laying the foundation for a globally connected learning framework that prepares future healthcare professionals to address complex environmental and health challenges.

The study reflects a shared commitment to integrating sustainability, climate resilience, and global citizenship into health education. By examining perspectives across diverse cultural and educational contexts in Asia, the research aims to develop an innovative international collaborative education program that fosters interdisciplinary thinking and strengthens the capacity of future nurses and health professionals to respond to emerging global health issues. This effort directly contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting health-conscious education, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the development of innovative and internationally collaborative learning models, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by raising awareness of the interconnections between environmental sustainability and human health.

Supported by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the project also embodies the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening research cooperation among leading universities across Asia. Through collective knowledge production and academic exchange, the collaboration is expected to generate evidence-based educational strategies that empower future generations to become advocates for planetary health and sustainable development, ensuring healthier communities and a more resilient planet for all.
