What a Review of 127 Studies Tells Us About the Future of News in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
DiMS-RG — Every morning, millions of people read news articles they don’t realize were partially or entirely written by a machine. Artificial intelligence has quietly entered the world’s newsrooms, and it is changing journalism faster than most people know.
A research team from Universitas Hasanuddin, led by Dr. Alem Febri Sonni, conducted the most comprehensive synthesis of this trend to date, analyzing 127 carefully selected studies drawn from an original pool of 2,478 articles published between 2010 and 2024. Their systematic review, published in the international journal Journalism and Media, maps exactly where AI is helping, where it is hurting, and where the world stands dangerously divided.
The Numbers Are Staggering
Today, 73% of news organizations use AI for automated news writing. Another 68% use it for data analysis, and 62% rely on it to personalize content for different readers. AI has boosted speed dramatically — 76% of studies show news is produced faster — and improved factual accuracy in 58% of cases. But here’s the catch: 42% of studies found that AI-generated news lacks nuance and context. Meanwhile, 42% of articles are being written with less human depth, and in 42% of organizations, contextualization has actually declined. Faster, yes. Shallower, possibly.
The Journalist Is Not Dead — But Is Changing
Contrary to popular fear, AI is not replacing journalists wholesale. Instead, 67% of studies show that journalists are now able to focus on deeper, higher-value reporting. New “journalist–programmer” hybrid roles have emerged in 52% of organizations, and 38% of studies emphasize a new urgency: journalists must develop “AI literacy” — the ability to understand, use, and critically question the algorithms they work alongside. The human element — empathy, moral judgment, contextual understanding — remains irreplaceable. But the journalist who cannot work with AI may soon be left behind.
The Ethical Warning Signs
The review uncovers a serious alarm: 82% of studies flag algorithm transparency as a major concern, 76% raise data privacy risks, and 71% question accountability for AI-generated content. When AI systems are trained on biased historical data, they can quietly amplify discrimination in the stories that reach millions of readers every day. And 73% of studies conclude that existing regulations are already outdated — governments are simply not keeping up.
Perhaps the most urgent finding in this research relates to Sustainable Development Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which calls for global cooperation to close technology gaps and build equitable systems for all nations. The study reveals a stark AI adoption divide: North America leads at 82%, Europe at 68%, while Africa stands at only 32% and Latin America at 35%. This is not just a technology gap — it is an information gap. Countries with lower AI adoption risk being left behind in global public discourse. SDG 17 calls on governments, technology companies, research institutions, and media organizations to partner across borders so that the benefits of AI in journalism are shared globally, not hoarded by the wealthiest nations.
AI will not save journalism on its own — and it will not destroy it either. But the choices made right now, in newsrooms, classrooms, legislatures, and technology labs around the world, will determine whether AI becomes a force for richer, fairer, more informed societies, or simply a faster machine for shallower news.
