Counterterrorism in Southeast Asia has become increasingly complex due to the evolving nature of violent extremism, transnational terrorist networks, and the growing influence of digital platforms in radicalization and recruitment. Countries across the region have responded by combining law enforcement measures with preventive strategies, including intelligence sharing, border security cooperation, community resilience, and counter-radicalization initiatives under regional frameworks such as ASEAN. These multidimensional approaches acknowledge that terrorism is not solely a security issue but also a social, political, and ideological challenge that requires interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policymaking. Indonesia has developed one of the region's most comprehensive counterterrorism frameworks by integrating security operations with prevention, rehabilitation, and community engagement. Institutions such as the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Indonesian National Police's Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) have played significant roles in disrupting terrorist networks, while educational institutions, religious organizations, and civil society have contributed to preventing violent extremism through deradicalization and counter-narrative programs. However, emerging threats—including online radicalization, foreign terrorist fighters, cyber-enabled extremism, and the nexus between terrorism and organized crime—require continuous research, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration to formulate adaptive and sustainable policy responses. In this context, the Counter Terrorism Research Group (CTRG) under the Thematic Research Group (TRG) of Hasanuddin University provides an important academic platform for advancing interdisciplinary research on terrorism, security, and resilience. Established as part of Hasanuddin University's strategic initiative to strengthen impactful and internationally collaborative research, the TRG framework promotes evidence-based studies that contribute to national security policy, regional stability, and community resilience. The CTRG seeks to integrate perspectives from international relations, political science, sociology, law, public policy, and digital governance to analyze contemporary terrorism challenges in Southeast Asia. Through research collaborations, policy recommendations, international publications, and partnerships with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, the group aims to contribute to more effective counterterrorism strategies while supporting peacebuilding, democratic governance, and sustainable development in Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region. .
