Protecting Indonesia's coral reefs through science.
CORES brings together marine scientists at Universitas Hasanuddin to advance coral reef rehabilitation, sustainability, and connectivity research across the coral triangle.

CORES — Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Sustainability — is a Thematic Research Group (TRG) hosted by Universitas Hasanuddin. Our scientists combine field ecology, molecular tools, and community engagement to safeguard Indonesia’s reef systems.
From restoring degraded reefs in South Sulawesi to mapping genetic connectivity across the Coral Triangle, we produce research that is rigorous, collaborative, and applied. CORES partners with national agencies, universities abroad, local governments, and fishing communities to translate science into conservation outcomes.
Three directions shape our science.
Our work is organised around three interlocking pillars — rehabilitation at the reef scale, sustainable governance at the coastal scale, and connectivity at the seascape scale.
Coral Reef Rehabilitation
Active restoration techniques — coral transplantation, nursery programmes, substrate engineering — tested across degraded reef systems in eastern Indonesia.
Sustainable Reef Management
Community-based governance, fisheries co-management, and blue economy frameworks that balance conservation with coastal livelihoods.
Connectivity & Biodiversity
Population genetics, larval dispersal modelling, and biodiversity surveys that map how reefs across the Coral Triangle are ecologically linked.
